How to Make a Paracord Necklace

How to Make a Paracord Necklace

Having jewelry that serves a purpose can be a great thing. Paracord jewelry is very popular among hikers and campers as the jewelry can be stylish and provides cordage should you ever need it. Creating paracord jewelry isn’t as difficult as one might think. A paracord necklace can be a simple piece of jewelry to create that will provide you with a decent length of paracord if you ever need it.

Paracord NecklaceTo create a necklace, you’ll need to gather a few materials. If you want your necklace to be made of two different colors, get paracord in whichever two colors you want to use. You can create the necklace with only one color if you’d like.

You’ll also need a pair of scissors that can easily cut through the paracord. You need a way to heat the paracord to melt it. This can be done with a lighter, but it’s easiest to do if you have a torch type of lighter.

How To Make a Paracord Necklace

To determine the length of paracord that you’ll need, you’ll need to measure the neck in the style that you want the necklace to be in.

If you want to make a choker necklace, you’ll measure right up against the skin.

If you want a longer necklace, measure exactly where you want the necklace to lay on the body.

Once you have your measurement, you’ll need to convert it to the length of paracord you’ll need.

For every inch you want the necklace to be, you’ll need four and a half inches of paracord in each color. So, if the necklace will be 15 inches, you will need 67 and a half inches.

You can also add around six inches to each cord to provide yourself with a bit of extra to work with.

To begin the weave of cord, you’ll need to fold both pieces of cord in half.

Then, you’ll want to lay one of the pieces over the center of the other cord. You’ll be creating an “X” shape.

Take the two ends of one piece of paracord and place them under the other piece of cord. Pull this tight and always make sure to keep tension as you work.

Now, take the ends of the other cord and pass the ends under the other cord.

Keep going with this pattern for a while. Once you’ve gotten about three inches of knotting done, you’ll want to go back to the beginning and pull the top loop until you have a loop about three-quarters of an inch in diameter.

Go back and continue knotting until you reach the end.

Once you’re at the end, take the second rope and tie a knot. You’ll be using an overhand knot.

Cut the two ends. Do this with the other piece of cord. The loop you’ve created with the knot will be used to connect the two sides of the necklace.

Melt the ends, pushing them together.

Having a paracord necklace or a paracord bracelet with you when you’ll be out on a hike can be lifesaving when you’re in need of cordage. The necklace can be broken apart to provide you with ample cording that you can use to build shelters or secure food into a tree.

The great thing is that most people won’t even realize you’re carrying around a cord. It looks just like a stylish necklace.
